At WWU, nearly 50% of students experience food insecurity.
This means that roughly 8000 students are struggling to find adequate, reliable, and sufficient food sources to sustain their academic and personal lives. On-campus food pantries are a way to provide intermediate and emergency support for these students. Western's pantries operate solely on the generosity of donors, students and staff that both fund and manage the flow of aid to the community. Currently these pantries are not able to meet the staggering and rising demand, as students experiencing food insecurity has increased by 14% since 2022, and is just continuing to grow.
Combating food insecurity is essential to supporting our students' academic and personal fulfillment. Additionally, underrepresented and marginalized groups of students are at a significantly higher risk of facing food insecurity, underscoring larger systemic inequalities.
Our goal is to raise funds for the growth and continuation of the College of Business and Economics' food pantry, as it is vital to supporting WWU students with these challenges. Donations go directly to purchasing items students have reported are in highest demand.
