WWU is proud to have one of only twelve collegiate chapters of the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA). WWU NSTA chapter members are provided leadership opportunities through the NSTA National Preservice Chapter program, and are invited to participate in a variety of professional learning webinars specially designed for future teachers.
NSTA hosts the National Conference on Science Education annually. In spring 2025, that will take place in Philadelphia, PA. Each year, WWU students have raised funds and applied for grants to send as many members as possible to the conference. You can read about last year's group's trip to Denver here.
Since 2008, Dr. Hanuscin (Professor of Elementary Education and Science, Math, & Technology Education) has taken future teachers to the NSTA conference. She and her students regularly meet up with program alumni who are now in their teaching careers- some of whom have gone on to become leaders in NSTA as well!
The National Conference on Science Education (NSTA Philly25) will be one of the largest conferences focused exclusively on science and STEM teaching for K–20 teachers of science—educators will gather to discover best practices and strategies in science education. This is a fantastic opportunity for WWU students to sharpen their skills, while also establishing connections with peers from around the country. NSTA Philly25 will give them the chance to attend science-specific professional learning from a variety of experts in the field. The conference features hundreds of peer-led sessions and workshops designed to enhance skills and knowledge on key areas vital to successful learning, including ensuring teaching aligns with state teaching standards and research-based teaching pedagogy.
WWU chapter members will also have the chance to explore the Expo Hall to engage in one-on-one conversations with industry experts, participate in live product demos, and explore new teaching and learning tools and resources. Plus, I will be able to bring home conference materials, allowing them to share what they have learned with other future teachers.
Offering opportunities for further learning and development is a great way to show your appreciation for the teaching profession and support future teachers. I hope you will consider supporting our students!
