Greetings from Ruth and Wayne, your resident aquatic toxicologist and risk assessor at Western Washington University.
Last year, we started alumni gatherings in Bellingham, Seattle, and Sacramento. I can’t tell you how cool it was to see former students from graduating classes as far back as the 1990’s. We hadn’t seen many of you in years and really enjoyed catching up and learning about you now. It is SO INSPIRING to see you all doing making a mark on the world in so many ways - from health care to teaching to solving environmental problems!
Those gatherings were affirmation that we’ve been honored over the years to work with many amazing students who are now making a difference in the world. It’s not only the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and technical writing that we taught students in the classroom, but the other experiences our students had that led them to careers where they make that difference. PNW-SETAC conferences, PNWIS-AWMA Environmental Challenges, and research with Ruth or Wayne are some of the crucial student experiences in the environmental toxicology emphasis at WWU.
As you might know, we held our first crowd-funder last year and exceeded our goal! Eight students benefitted from that support in their research projects on passive samplers in freshwater systems. Three of those students are presenting that work at the regional SETAC meeting in early April. Research with undergraduates has become more challenging because of limited funding, but your support made it possible for our students to keep doing research and attend scientific conferences. Money raised through this project will once again be used to support our undergraduates doing independent research. It will pay for lab supplies, stipends, and travel to conferences to present their work. You are all part of a legacy that we want to ensure continues.
Our goal this year includes repeat donors and at least 20 donors who didn’t give last year. Any amount helps! Thank you so much for all that you do! I hope to see you all again at our next events.
Thanks!
Ruth and Wayne
